The lightweight and high-strength characteristics of fiber-reinforced nanocomposites are attractive to a number of industries and applications. Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs), an emerging type of one-dimensional tubular nanostructure, possess many extraordinary structural and physical properties and are promising as reinforcing additives for disruptive multifunctional nanocomposite technologies. In this talk, I will present some of our recent work on studying the structural and mechanical properties of BNNTs and their polymer and metal nanocomposites. Specifically, my talk will focus on discussing the superior structural and mechanical properties of BNNTs in high temperature environments, and the interfacial load transfer between individual BNNTs and matrix materials in BNNT-reinforced polymer and metal nanocomposites. Our research work helps to better understand the structural and mechanical properties of BNNTs and the development of BNNT technologies.

Bio-Sketch: Dr. Changhong Ke is currently an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Binghamton. He received his BS and MS degrees from Beijing Institute of Technology, and his PhD degree from Northwestern University. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Duke University before he joined SUNY-Binghamton. His current research interests include experimental nanomechanics of 1D and 2D nanostructures, nanocomposites, nanoscale adhesion and interfaces, bio-inspired hybrid nano-systems, and nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS).
